Preferences and settings
OpenChrom provides a variety of options for customizing the workbench. They may be divided into global settings – referred to as preferences – and local settings. Changed preferences are stored permanently and affect all relevant functionalities within OpenChrom. The preferences dialog allows changing the settings of various algorithms (e.g. peak detection) and some appearance features of the graphs as well as adjusting the proxy settings.
The local settings only affect the currently active view and are lost after closing down OpenChrom. They allow an extensive customization of the appearance of the current graph, which may be useful e.g. for publication purposes.

2. On the left side of the preference dialog box 5 categories are listed. For most users only the categories "Chromatography/Spectrometry" (A) and "General" (B) may be of interest. It is recommended to leave the other 3 categories untouched. These may be only of interest for advanced users with programming capabilities. When the category "Chromatography/Spectrometry" is selected there is a dialog appearing on the right side (C). The dialog refers to automatic "perspective switching". It can be opted to occur in cases where data is processed (e.g. peak detection) and a preset perspective exists which displays the results of the selected processing step in a recommended way (e.g. after peak detection the switched perspective will include a peak table, peak mass spectrum view etc.). The current views which may "disappear" on switching are not "lost". They can be reopened manually or by switching back to the former perspective.
3. When you open the category „Chromatography/Spectrometry“ (A) you get access to parameter settings of various functionalities. We recommend that you dedicate some of your time to exploring the available settings options as it may greatly improve the value and performance of OpenChrom for your tasks. In the sub-category „Settings“ (B) you can access some settings which are more general or global and did not fit into any of the other sub-categories.
4. For most users the only settings dialog which may be of interest within the category „General“ is „Network Connections“. It allows to adjust the proxy settings.
